Reviews
There are many excellent restaurants in the Quinta de Lago / Vale do Lobo area and around the marinas in the Algarve, some expensive some not so expensive. The restaurants that feature in this section are places that Portuguese people and other nationalities that live in the Algarve frequent rather than just tourists and people who are visiting the Algarve on all male corporate golf / drinking trips, your meal will not be ruined by a large group of noisy drunken British 'golfers'. Most are inexpensive, all offer excellent food and I have had meals in each of them on many occasions.

Calheiros - Olhos d'Agua

This restaurant is in the centre of Olhos d'Agua and about 8 minutes walk from the beach. They have a good selection of meat and fish, with a choice of vegetables or salad. On the most recent occasion that I was here I had Chateaubriand (see photograph), which was excellent and extremely good value for money. Geoffrey who I am sitting with in the photograph said that he had not had a better meal in the Algarve. I often visit this restaurant for an inexpensive meal, for instance a Portuguese Beefsteak with home made fried potatoes (which are excellent) and salad is just 7.50 euros.
The service is always very good, it is the owner who does most of the cooking. The ambience is nice but slightly ruined by two televisions which seem to be permanently tuned in to football, but the volume is so low that one can hardly hear them and the food so good that you will soon forget that they are even there.
To find this restaurant on a google map click here - the restaurant is approximately where the R of R. da Bela Vista is written
Retiro do Campones - Near Loule off the 125
Retiro do Campones is so well hidden from the public view that when you eat here for the first time you will be amazed that others have also found it. However it is popular because of its excellent food, attractive restaurant and excellent service from members of the owner’s family.
The menu offers meat and fish; the owner guarantees the fish to be fresh and bought from either Quarteira or Ohlao market that day. Prices are moderate and you will have as much or more than you can possibly eat. On one occasion we chose T-bone steaks, which were enormous, cooked exactly as we asked for them to be cooked and delicious. Another excellent choice on the menu is a small joint of lamb for two people, which is superb.
The general ambience is very attractive, as you will see from the photograph. The style of the restaurant is typical of the Algarve, a long low building with a tiled roof, the underneath of which is lined with varnished bamboo poles. Sadly there is a television in one corner but it is the other side of the bar and we were enjoying our food so much we didn’t notice it.
It is not difficult to find. Travelling east from Quatro Stradas on the 125, go for two miles then turn right where there is a Sumol sign on the right side of the road. From there go a few 100 metres, over the railway line, and take the second small turning on the left. The restaurant is 50 metres on your right. At weekends it would be advisable to book in advance, their telephone number is 289 328412.

La Cigale - Ohlos d'Agua
La Cigale is a well known restaurant, it overlooks the beach at Ohlos d’Agua with a fine view of the sea, an attractive interior very well laid out so that everyone can look out to sea through the enormous expanse of windows along the south facing side. A sign on the outside proclaims it to be a snack bar; it is a very expensive snack bar! But a very good restaurant. All the tables in the restaurant are quite close to the long window and so you have a wonderful view of the beach and the sea while you are enjoying your dinner. The menu is extensive with a variety of meat and fresh fish. We enjoyed an excellent halibut and the service was good although we had to wait a long time for our butter sauce because it was delivered to another table by mistake.

In addition to seating for a hundred people in the restaurant there are also chairs and tables on the terrace. The food is first-rate but not cheap, you are paying also for the location, ambience and reputation. If you are staying locally to Ohlos d’Agua they will collect you in an eight-seater mini bus from your hotel and deliver you back after lunch or dinner. Even in mid March when we had dinner there the restaurant was almost half full, most of the diners seemed to be Portuguese. Later in the year I would recommend telephoning 289 501637 to book a table.

Restaurants on Algarve beaches that you can anchor off and
be collected from your boat and brought ashore for lunch
There are many excellent restaurants on beaches in the Algarve. All of them offer a wonderful selection of fresh fish, shell fish and a good variety of puddings plus a good selection of very good Portuguese wines. Given calm conditions and preferably an offshore wind we can anchor off a restaurant and go ashore in our tender for lunch or dinner. Whilst it isn’t much effort to launch a tender, it is a great luxury to anchor and then make a telephone call to a restaurant and ask them to send someone out with a boat to collect us.
I know of three restaurants who offer this service, going from west to east they are as follows:
‘Sueste’ at Ferragudo. Tel: 282461592.
To see a google map of Ferragudo click here - Sueste is at the western end of R. Infante Santo
When you telephone you will probably speak to Dadinha who speaks excellent English. Most of their food is cooked on a barbecue on the quay, you can see it under the large umbrella on the left of the photograph. Delicious fresh fish is their speciality, but you will also find on their menu fried shrimps in garlic, grilled king prawns, clams, fish and shell fish soup. For your pudding you have a choice of chocolate mousse, almond pie and orange tart plus a selection of ice creams prepared with seasonal fresh fruit. They have a very good selection of excellent Portuguese wine.
Ferragudo is a beautiful village and one of the few places in this part of the Algarve that is totally unspoilt so you will enjoy your meal in a natural ambience, the building was probably fishermens’ cottages originally and so both inside and outside your surroundings are traditional Algarve architecture. If you choose to eat outside you will be overlooking the quay and the river Arade.
Directions: On arrival by boat at the entrance to the ‘Rio Arade’ steer a course of 025°M to leave red buoy number 2 to port, then steer 010°M leaving Marina de Portimão and red buoy number 4 to port, go for another 100 yards to green buoy number 1, leave it to starboard and alter course to 335°M, travel for another 100 yards and Ferragudo will now be abeam to starboard. You will see the lifeboat station with its red door and ‘Sueste’ is immediately to the left of it. Between you and Sueste there are a number of Yachts that are on moorings, anchor a little to the west of them in about 6 metres of water. A soon as you have anchored, telephone the restaurant and they will send a boat out to pick you up.
‘Evaristo’ three nautical miles west of Albufeira. Tel: 289591666
To see a google map showing Evaristo click here - it is at the end of the road that branches off R. da Torre Velha in a SW direction
Whilst Evaristo is a modern building it is in the most beautiful of settings with its own beach overlooking where you will have anchored your boat. There is a relaxed ambience in the restaurant, good music and of course wonderful food. Fish is their speciality, plus shell fish & clams. They have a reputation for being innovative with their food. If you are not a fish eater their barbecued ribs are a speciality. In addition to a fine selection of Portuguese wines their speciality is Sangria.
In 2002 ‘Evaristo’ won an award for the best traditional dish in Portugal.
‘Evaristo’ is very popular with owners of motor cruisers from Vilamoura Marina, it is just 20 minutes away, and has a clientele that visit often by both boat and car.
An additional service that ‘Evaristo’ offer is that if you prefer to stay on board your boat they will bring your meal out to you.
Directions: Evaristo is 8.8 nautical miles west of the entrance to Marina de Vilamoura and 2.4 miles west of Albufeira Marina entrance, if you anchor at GPS position 37° 04’28 N 008° 18’30 W you will see Evaristo as shown in the photograph. When you telephone and ask to be collected someone will come out from the beach in the boat shown in the photograph.
‘O Estaminé’ on Ilha Deserta near Faro in the Ria Formosa
Tel: 917811856

To see a satellite photograph showing the restaurant in the centre click here
‘O Estaminé’ is owned and run by José Vargas and his wife Isabel Vicente. The restaurant is an attractive wooden building that is in fact the only building on the deserted Island. There are no cars or quads here, the atmosphere is one of complete tranquility that is totally unique in the most beautiful of settings. Wild flowers grow in profusion in the sand surrounding the restaurant.
The food is delicious, mostly fresh fish, clams and a variety of local shell fish. Squid and cuttle fish are a speciality. Their ‘beach prawns’, a recipe invented on Ilha Deserta, are wonderful. They have a variety of salads, my favourite being ‘Montanheira’ salad which is ‘short chopped tomatoes, cucumber, onion, pepper and oregano’. Most of the food is cooked on a barbecue, for anyone who does not want fish they have excellent entrecote steak.
Their puddings are very good and are all recipes invented by Isabel.
They have a choice of excellent Portuguese wines, beers and of course soft drinks.
The restaurant itself was built in 2007 and replaced a building that had housed the restaurant for 18 years. The architect was José's brother, it is a revolutionary design with 3 glass sides that can be opened or closed according to weather conditions. There is also a bar and snack bar.
Directions: ‘O Estaminé’ is 15 nautical miles south east of Vilamoura, it is on the island known as Ilha Deserta, but in fact its proper name is Ilha da Barretta. It is situated in Ria Formosa and is the long strip of sand between Faro Island and Ilha da Culatra. Between these two islands is the channel at Cabo de Santa Maria, that is the only navigable entrance into Ria Formosa. From the centre of this entrance steer 015°M leaving red number 2 buoy to port, ‘O Estaminé’ is at that point abeam of you to port, continue on this course to red buoy number 4 and alter course to 240°M go for about 200 yards on this course and anchor in about 5 metres of water.
Then telephone José and he will come out to pick you up with his launch. José has another boat and by prior arrangement can pick you up at the Porta Nova Pier at Faro. Alternatively there is a Catamaran Ferry that goes to the island departing from Porta Nova Pier at 1000, 1130, 1300 and 1615 and returning to Faro departing from the island at 1045, 1215, 1530 and 1800 everyday.
Mariscos & Petiscos at Cabanas near Tavira Tel: 281370722
To see a Google map with Mariscos & Petiscos in the centre click here - it is on the north side of Av. Ria Formosa on the western end
This is without doubt one of the best seafood restaurants in the Algarve, it is very popular and I advise that you should book a table. Cabanas is a popular holiday destination and is very unspoilt as you would expect of this part of the Algarve.
The service at the restaurant is excellent and all the waiters speak English. Your first course is provided soon after you sit down at your table and consists of delicious small rolls, butter and both olive and seafood paté, cheese and local prawns. For your main course The Mariscada (very large plate of mixed sea food) is just amazing, there are various different prawn dishes, all of them are delicious and of course fresh fish. For anyone who prefers meat they have excellent steak. For your pudding they have several different chocolate specialities, however one that is called 'The best chocolate cake in the world' is definately the best chocolate cake in the world!!
Directions: Mariscos & Petiscos is on the waterfront on Rua Comandante Henrique Tenreiro in Cabanas which is just off the 125 about 5 kilometers north east of Tavira.
By car turn right off the 125 following a signpost for Cabanas, go for one and a half kilometers and turn right at a T junction, go for about 300 metres and you will find the restaurant on your right.
By boat, anchor at Quatro Aguas (Tavira) and travel north east by dinghy up the channel inside the sandbank, you will find the restaurant on your left after about one nautical mile.
O Retiro - Boliqueime Tel: 289366339 Mobile 965391227
O Retiro is on the south side of the 125 about 100 metres to the east of the traffic lights at Boliqueim
The restaurant has free WI FI so you can check your email while you wait for your lunch
To see a Google map with Boliqueime in the centre click here - the restaurant is where the ei of Boliqueime is printed

I often seem to be near Boliqueime at lunch time but have never found a good restaurant there, that is until a few days ago when I discovered 'O Retiro'. I need search no more, this restaurant is excellent – 5 star service and 5 star food AND not expensive at all. We started of with an octopus salad which was delicious and then had Entrecosto with 'punched' boiled potatoes and salad which you can see in a photograph to the right, all washed down with a large bottle of water. The total bill for two of us €20.70!! (January 2009)
Our meal was excellent, the Entrecosto had been cooked on the barbecue outside and was delicious, the potatoes were perfect and the salad which in less good restaurants I often don't bother to eat was excellent.
The restaurant is open six days a week and closed on Sunday, the general ambiance combined with the helpfulness of the staff make a very pleasant atmosphere in which to have either lunch or dinner. Their specialty is grilled meat and fish, all cooked on the barbecue outside. Two of the most popular dishes are Veal Steak Mirandesa and Veal Chops Arouguesa, this meat does actually come from the Mirandela and Arouga areas which is traditionally where the best beef in Portugal comes from. The fish is all fresh and caught off the Algarve coast.
The owner Renato Sousa is proud of the fact that he has to offer some of the best wines produced in Portugal. We did not have enough room left to fit in one of his puddings, but his Orange and Carob Cake and his Almond Cake, both Algarvian puddings, looked wonderful.
We have now had lunch there twice and on both occasions there was room for us to park our car outside, there is a very nice bar where you can just have a drink and two eating areas. One just beyond the bar as shown to the left and the other shown above left which has windows on three sides and was very pleasant to sit in on a cold but sunny November lunch time.
ADEGA DA MARINA – LAGOS
To find this restaurant on a google map click here, it is on the west side of Av. dos Descobrimentos near the bridge

I have been going to this restaurant in Lagos for longer and more often than any other in Portugal, when describing it to people who may have been there I call it the restaurant with the long tables. This is a good description, as you can see from the photograph below, it also resembles the 13th century dining room where we had our meals at my school in Dorset, there is however one enormous difference, the food at Adega is excellent.
The menu is in several languages, there is fresh fish, sardines and the best steak in the Algarve! They obviously have several different steaks, but the one to go for is 'A piece of veal cooked on charcoal', it is excellent and always cooked exactly as you want it and often almost more than people can eat as you can see from the photograph below! The price of one of these wonderful steaks is just €8.50 (in November 2008). The boiled potatoes were delicious and a refreshing change from the chips that are sometimes the only choice in some restaurants, the bacalhau that you can also see in the photograph was also excellent.
Probably 95% of the people that you will find eating there will be Portuguese, it is always busy and in the summer try to get there before 1 pm for lunch and before 8 pm for dinner, if you are later than that you may well have to queue outside, but you won't have to wait too long, and when you get inside it will have been worth the wait because the food and service are excellent.
It is not difficult to find, it is on the west side of the river in Lagos opposite Lagos Marina reception office and reception pontoon. There is parking opposite the restaurant on the other side of the road, so you may have to go past the restaurant and down to a roundabout about 350 yards on, then drive back down the road and there should be a space for you overlooking the river in front of the restaurant. OR if you find yourself in the marina on the east side of the river, park you car there somewhere and then walk over the river on the footbridge, turn left and the restaurant is about 100 yards on your right.
Casa dos Presuntos - On the N2 and 32 kilometers north of Faro
To find Cortelha on a google map click here you will find it in the middle of the map.
We discovered this restaurant by accident on our way down the N2 to Faro from Almodôvar, leaving Almodôvar at about 12.30 we had decided that it was too early to have lunch there but would stop at the first restaurant that we saw on the road to Faro. Surprisingly we drove for 44 kilometers before we found a restaurant, but it was a beautiful drive on a very good but winding road through remote countryside with some stunning views.
The restaurants name is Casa dos Presuntos it is shown in the photograph above and was on the right and side of the road as we approached it from the north. It is in the village of Cortelha and is 32 kilometers north of Faro, this is a very small village and it is opposite a petrol station, so you won't miss it.
If you like Portuguese tradition cooking this is the place to go and have lunch. On entering the restaurant it seem a little dark at first and was full of locals clearly enjoying their lunch.
São had Cozido à Portuguesa which she said was excellent but much more than she could eat, this is not a favourite of mine so I had Espatadas de Porco Preto which was wonderful.
Also on the menu was a variety of game including wild boar and venison. To compliment their excellent food they have a very good selection of Portuguese wines.
There is also a small shop in a separate room, shown in the photograph to the left, selling a wide range of local products such as olive oil, honey, handbags, useful wooden and leather boxes and even base ball caps and other items made from local cork.
The restaurant has been in the same family now for three generations and a total of more than 100 years. The present generation consists of Isabel, Sandra and Nuno Sebastião who you can see in the photograph above and to the right. Their telephone number should you want to book a table is 289 846 184.
Vaults - In the center of Almancil

To see a google map of Almancil click here - The restaurant is in Av 5 de Outubro approximately opposite where you will see 78 printed
I must have driven past Vaults restaurant on countless occasions, but in future will find driving past anywhere around lunch or dinner time extremely difficult. This restaurant is excellent, which is an understatement because the lunch that we had there last week was outstanding.
It is situated on the road that goes through Almancil (originally the 125) as you approach the center of Almancil from the Vilamoura direction the Vaults is on the right hand side between the Totta Bank and the Farmacia, about three hundred yards before you get to the traffic lights, on the right.
The restaurant is owned by Richard and Lil Wills, who work with their waitress Ligi and chef Rewien to achieve excellence in both the food that they offer, their excellent service and the ambiance of the restaurant itself.
Rewien's origins are Indian but was brought up in Holland and so has experience of Indian as well as European cuisine, he also cooks Thai dishes which with his Currys are reputed to be the best in the Algarve.
The outside of the restaurant is not particularly glamorous as can be seen from the photograph above, it is in fact the oldest building in Almancil and was originally a stable. When you walk in however you will be surprised by how well the old original brickwork in the vaulted ceiling has combined with more modern but stylish and classical furnishings which have produced a general effect that is both luxurious but simple.
We started off with a Greek salad which we enjoyed & then both chose a dish of the day which was pieces of fresh cod served with a yogurt sauce and it was delicious. The desserts are not produced by the chef but by someone who comes in specifically to make them. The selection was so good it was difficult to make a decision, finally São chose 'Bread & Butter Pudding' and I chose 'Lemon Cheese Cake' with the agreement that we would share them, both were wonderful. The price of our meal was very reasonable, just 29 euros for two of us (February 2009).
On Sunday they have a carvery for both lunch and dinner with a selection of roast joints and fresh vegetables and traditional accompaniments such as 'Yorkshire Pudding'. The rest of the week they offer dishes of the day as well as a very extensive 'A la Carte' menu. They are not open on Saturday.
The restaurants telephone number is: 289 391883. It has a very good web site which shows their menu and opening times etc: http://www.vaultsrestaurant.com For your GPS the address is: Ave 5 de Outubro 85, Almancil
VENEZA - On the road from Albufeira to Paderne at Mem Moniz
To find Mem Moniz on a google map clkick here - You will see Mem Moniz in the centre of the map
I have been to Veneza twice before and on both occasions did not have my camera with me. This restaurant has an almost legendary reputation for excellent food and fine wines. If you enjoy wine this is the place to go; the restaurant is spread over three attractive rooms, each room with a wonderful selection of very high quality Portuguese wines.
It is a very well established restaurant; at the second festival of gastronomy in Albufeira they got first prize, they were finalists in the 1st Concourse of Gastronomy of the Algarve in 2000 and they got an award at the 'Melhor Garrafeira Nacional in 2006.
Not surprisingly, this is a very popular restaurant, mainly but not entirely with Portuguese people. The only reason that I have been there just three times is because on several occasions I have tried to book a table at the last moment and they have been fully booked. So make sure you book at the least the day before if not earlier, their telephone number is 289 367129. They are closed on Monday
evening and all day on Tuesday.
If you want to you can go there just to buy wine, I am sure that you will not find a better selection anywhere in the Algarve, so you don't even have to eat there, but you would would be crazy not to! Instead of browsing through a wine list you can walk round the three rooms and see more than 1000 bottles of wine displayed on shelves made from old wine boxes. You don't have to buy wine by the case, just select what bottles you want, pay for them and take them away with you. You may well however want to buy by the case and if so, to be certain that the wine you have selected is one that you will like you can taste a selection in the part of the restaurant that you can see in the photograph below and to the left.
The food is traditional Algarvian - so you can expect cataplana, wild game, seafood, and plenty of other traditional Portuguese dishes. They have two large fish tanks full of crabs, lobsters, cray-fish and clams etc..
We had lunch there in March 2009 – For our first course we had some cheese and presunto and for our main courses we both chose dishes of the day, São asked for lamb and I chose duck cooked with oranges, which arrived at our table in record time and both were excellent.
São had 'Pudin' for her dessert which she said was delicious, I chose Arroz Doce which I always enjoy and we both rounded off our meal with some excellent coffee. The total cost of this meal was 37 euros.
To find Veneza take the N395 from Albufeira towards Paderne. Carry on for about 4kms, until the road starts to drop down the hill towards Paderne. You will go through Mem Moniz and precisely at the moment you are passing the sign that says you are leaving Mem Moniz, you will see the restaurant on your right.
If you come into Purgatorio you have gone about two kilometers too far!
CASA CHICO ZÉ
On the 125 about 4 kilometers north east of Lagos - Tel: 282 798 205

I have often gone past Casa Chico Zé at lunch time and been amazed by not only the amount of cars parked outside, but also the wide selection from local builders pick ups to the most expensive Mercedes and BMWs.
I had heard that it is a place where you can have a very inexpensive and excellent lunch and have been meaning to go there for some time. The reason why I have not until now is because it is about 4 kilometers north east of Lagos on the 125 and when I am in Lagos I have already parked the car or motorbike and so have always had lunch somewhere that is walking distance either in the town or the marina.
Last week we were driving towards Lagos at around 1.30 pm and decided to stop there for lunch. It will not be my last visit, in fact I hope to be a frequent visitor. Our lunch was excellent, the ambience perfect and the service first class.
The restaurant consists of two large attractive rooms with their walls decorated with old agricultural tools, ceramic plates and large wine bottles.
There is also a large covered area outside with two long rows of tables and benches.
The menu is written on a black board and consists of a good selection of meat and fish plus of course some traditional Algarvian dishes. We both chose ‘Espetada Mista’ (mixed meat kebab) and a large salad between us. The kebabs were wonderful and enormous and the salad much more than we could manage. Including bread, olives etc and a drink each, plus a pudding. The bill came to a total of €20.25 (April 2009), I don’t think it would be possible to have a more reasonable lunch anywhere in the Algarve.
Now I understand why it Casa Chico Zé is so popular and has such a good reputation. They are only open for lunch, which by the time we left was extending well into mid afternoon.
To find Casa Chico Zé from the A22, come off the motorway at the Lagos Este turn off, turn right at the roundabout on the 125 and it is .34 of a kilometer on your left. Alternatively if you are travelling west on the 125 drive through Odiaxere, go straight over the roundabout just beyond Odiaxere and the restaurant is .34 of a kilometer after the roundabout on your left. From Lagos take the 125 east and it is just before the first roundabout on your right.
To find this restaurant on a google map click here it is just a few hundred meters north east of Chinicato which is shown in the center of the map.
CASA DO RIO at Alvor - Tel: 282 457443

I visited Casa do Rio in October 2009 by boat from Lagos, it was the third day of an ICC course for up to 10 meters and we had intended to go to Boca do Rio just north of Portimão in the river Arade. The weather was not good at sea as a result of a south easterly force 5, and so we decided to go to Alvor instead.
I had heard very good reports of the Casa do Rio restaurant in Alvor and for some time had been meaning to go there, this was a perfect opportunity. Pilotage up to the anchorage from the harbour entrance is now quite easy as there are two buoys, firstly a green and then a red one, even then however proceed at a low speed with caution, this channel is narrow and it has drying sandbanks on either side.
There are now two pontoons off the quay at Alvor, whether you are arriving in a small boat or going ashore in a tender I suggest using the first one. As you walk ashore from this pontoon look up and to your right and you will see Casa do Rio. Three minutes later having walked up some stone steps you will be there and you will immediately realise that this is a very different restaurant from all the others on either side of the main street, where proprietors will stand outside trying to make eye contact with passers by to then engage them in conversation and suggest that they come inside for a meal.
Casa do Rio is clearly vastly superior to most if not all of the many other restaurants in Alvor, after being shown to a table, we chose to eat outside in the shade of a fir tree, a quick look at the menu and we realised that the food was not at all expensive and our surroundings, ambience and the wonderful view of the Alvor estuary were incomparable.
We all chose fish for our main course followed by excellent puddings, mine was chocolate mousse, and all agreed that we had not had a better meal anywhere in the Algarve.
Casa do Rio has an excellent web site which can be found at: www.restaurantecasadorio.com
Arriving by car - park your car on the waterfront by the palm trees, look up and you will see Restaurante Casa do Rio painted on the wall of the restaurant's terrace. A very short walk up some stone steps and you are there.

To find this restaurant on a google map click here - it is on Rua de São João No 25 A which you will see immediatly to the east of Zona Ribeirinha de Alvor which is the road that runs along the waterfront.
