YachtCom If you are going offshore you will need to have an SSB radio on board. Not just for communications by voice, but also email, weather forecasts etc etc. YachtCom based in Southampton in the UK are the only company that I know who specialise in running courses for the GMDSS Long range certificate, which is the qualification that you need to be able to use an SSB radio at sea. YachtCom also run VHF/DSC and RYA Radar courses. YachtCom is an RYA Training Centre.

Lagos Navigators Lagos Navigators was set up by a group of like-minded yachtsmen in 2004/05, to enable locals and visitors to meet and share views, experiences and information in a convivial environment. They use their activities to raise funds for the Children’s Home in Lagos, the “CASLAS Lar de Jovens”. They also transmit a news bulletin on Channel 9 at 9.30 am on Mondays and Fridays from Lagos Marina.

Algarve History Association I discovered the Algarve History Association in July 2010 as a result of attending a fascinating lecture at Lagoa on the Moors' occupation of Portugal and in particular with regard to the wonderful castles that they built during the 500 years that they were in Portugal. The association has free membership (all you have to do is register with your email address and a password) for which you get access to a newsletter, photographs and details of future lectures which are held at both Tavira and Lagoa once a month. There are also organised visits to places of historical interest with guided tours, lectures etc. Needless to say I have become a member.
